A Project is your own private workspace for one piece of work — a report, a customer, a side topic. It keeps the chats, files and instructions that belong together in one place, so every new chat in the Project starts with the same context.
What a Project is
A Project is a user-owned Agent, just like your personal Agent (My Agent), but one you create for a specific purpose. It belongs to you alone:
- Only you see a Project and its chats. Projects are not part of any Space and cannot be shared with other users.
- Files you add become the Project's Knowledge — the Agent searches them in every chat within the Project.
- Instructions are guidance the Agent follows in every chat within the Project, for example "Always answer in a formal tone" or "The client is ACME; use their terminology."
- Chats started in the Project stay in the Project.
Projects are available whenever personal Agents are enabled on your SAALT instance. If an administrator has switched personal Agents off, the Projects section does not appear.
Create a Project
- In the sidebar, find the Projects section and click + (New project).
- Type a name (up to 100 characters) and press Enter. Press Esc to cancel.
SAALT creates the Project and opens it. Your Projects are listed in the sidebar in alphabetical order; click one to open it and continue where you left off.
A new Project starts with the instance's default model and with file upload in chat switched on. You can switch the model in the chat like with any Agent; the models available are the same ones an administrator allows for personal Agents.
Working in a Project
The Project's start screen reads "Chats, files and instructions for this project, all in one place." and shows its files, Skills and memory. The top bar of every chat in a Project has two extra buttons:
- Files — shows how many files the Project has, e.g. Files (3). Opens the Project's settings at Knowledge, where you upload, view and remove files. You can also drag files onto the start screen ("Add files to this project").
- Instructions — opens a text box for the Project's instructions (up to 20,000 characters). Click Save to apply them; they take effect in the next message.
Project settings
A Project has a reduced set of settings compared to a Space Agent. The settings dialog contains:
- Knowledge — the Project's files. See Knowledge.
- Skills — reusable instruction bundles the Agent can load on demand. See Skills.
- Memory — what the Agent remembers about you within this Project. Because a Project belongs to you, every memory is personal; no sharing suggestions appear. See Memory.
Agent settings, chat settings, Apps and MCP servers, permissions, feedback and conversation history are not available for Projects.
Move chats into or out of a Project
You can move a chat between your personal Agent and your Projects:
- In the sidebar chat list, hover the chat and click ⋯.
- Choose Move to project and pick the target Project.
To take a chat out of a Project again, choose Move to project → Remove from project; the chat moves back to your personal Agent.
Only chats with your own Agents — your personal Agent or a Project — can be moved. Chats with Agents in a Space stay in that Space.
Rename or delete a Project
Open the Project and use the ⋯ menu in the chat top bar:
- Rename — enter a new name and click Save.
- Delete — after confirming "Delete project?", SAALT permanently deletes the Project, its chats and its files. This cannot be undone. Move any chats you want to keep to another Project or back to your personal Agent first.
Projects vs. Spaces
| Project | Space | |
|---|---|---|
| Owner | You | Your team or organisation |
| Visible to | Only you | Everyone with access to the Space |
| Contains | One Agent with its chats, files and instructions | Several Agents with their own Knowledge, Apps and permissions |
| Created by | Any user | Users with permission to create Spaces |
| Best for | Organising your own work | Agents a team uses together |
See Spaces for shared team workspaces.
