Memory lets an Agent remember durable facts about you across conversations with that Agent — so you don't have to repeat context every time you come back.
What it is
When Memory is on, the Agent picks up small, durable facts from your conversations — who you are, how you like to work, what you're working on, and corrections you've made — and uses them in later conversations with the same Agent. Memory is scoped per Agent: one Agent's memories are never used by another.
Nothing has to be saved by hand. About a minute after a conversation goes quiet, SAALT reads the new messages in the background, pulls out what is worth keeping, and merges it with what the Agent already knows: a fact that is already there isn't stored twice, and one that changed is updated. Task-specific chatter, the Agent's own answers and credentials are left out.
In a conversation the Agent doesn't load everything it knows — it uses the memories that fit your current message, plus any that an administrator has pinned.
Personal and shared memories
- Personal — about you, for one Agent. Only you see them, and only your conversations with that Agent use them. Administrators of the Agent can't see them either.
- Shared — knowledge that helps everyone using the Agent, such as how an internal tool works. Shared memories are used in every user's conversations with that Agent.
A shared memory is never created on its own. When the Agent learns something in your conversation that looks useful for everyone, it is held back as a suggestion and shown to you — and only you — at the top of your next new chat with that Agent, under "Worth remembering for everyone?":
- Share — adds it to the Agent's shared memory, where everyone using the Agent benefits from it.
- Not this — discards it for good; it won't be suggested again.
At most five suggestions are shown at a time. On your own personal Agents every memory is personal, so no suggestions appear there.
Nightly consolidation
Once a night SAALT tidies each Agent's memory: duplicates are merged, facts that a later conversation contradicted are replaced, stale ones are retired, and corrections you made carry the most weight. For shared memories the consolidation only cleans up what is there — it never adds anything.
Changes apply automatically. For an Agent's shared memories, an administrator sees the result of the last run in the Agent's Memory section ("12 memories became 9") and can Revert it.
When it's active
Memory is off for:
- Public Agents (Agents that can be embedded externally),
- anonymous users,
- incognito conversations (see Chat) — nothing from them is read, extracted or consolidated, and
- conversations started through the API.
Importing memories from ChatGPT or Claude
From SAALT 1.6.0 you can bring what another assistant knows about you into your personal Agent. In Personal Settings → Memory, choose Import memories:
- Copy prompt and run it in ChatGPT or Claude.
- Paste the answer into Paste the answer (3 to 20,000 characters) and choose Import.
SAALT extracts up to 50 facts from the text, removes secrets, skips facts it already has and screens each one like any other memory. Imported memories are personal and never pinned. The option is only there when personal Agents are enabled on your instance; if your memory is full (500 memories), delete some first.
Managing your memories
You manage what Agents remember about you from the Memory section in Personal Settings (My Account) — see Profile. Your personal memories are grouped by Agent, and you can:
- delete an individual memory,
- clear everything one Agent remembers about you, or
- Clear all memories — remove every memory across all Agents.
The start screen of a new chat also shows how many notes the Agent keeps about you ("3 notes — only visible to you"). Shared memories are not listed in Personal Settings; they are managed by the Agent's administrators.
For administrators
Per Agent — on or off. Memory is controlled by the Memory toggle under Agent Settings → Settings → Agent Capabilities (see Agents). It's on by default and unavailable for public Agents (the toggle is disabled with the tooltip "Memory is not available for public agents"). Turning it off stops reading, saving and consolidating memories but keeps the existing ones — they persist until deleted.
Per Agent — shared memory. The Agent's Memory section in the Agent admin dialog shows its shared memories. Anyone who can view the Agent's settings can open it; changes need permission to edit the Agent. From there you can:
- switch Allow shared memory off — shared memories are then no longer used and no new suggestions are made (on by default),
- Add a shared memory by hand,
- Pin a memory so it is used in every conversation, or delete it,
- see the last consolidation and Revert it, and
- review Recent changes.
Personal memories are private to each user and are not shown there.
Instance-wide. Super admins find a Memory section under Admin Tools → Global Settings:
- Nightly memory consolidation — on unless switched off.
- Dream model — the model that runs the consolidation. Without a choice, or if the chosen model is removed, the default model is used.
- Backfill memory embeddings — run this once after upgrading to SAALT 1.5.0. Memories saved before 1.5.0 can only be found by their content once they have been embedded; until then an Agent falls back to its pinned and most recent memories.
Privacy & safety
- Personal memories are per user — one person's memories are never used for or shown to another. Only shared memories, which a user approved or an administrator added, apply to everyone using the Agent.
- Common secrets — API keys and tokens,
Bearerheaders, private keys, passwords embedded in URLs — are replaced with[redacted]before a memory is stored. This catches secrets written out exactly, not paraphrased ones, so don't rely on it as a safeguard for credentials you paste into a chat. - Every new memory is screened against prompt injection before it is stored.
- Each person's memories and each Agent's shared memories are capped at 500; beyond that the least important, least used ones make room first. Pinned memories are never dropped.
- Memories are kept out of telemetry.
- Deleting a conversation does not delete the memories that came from it — remove those in Personal Settings.
